Amiri Baraka
Amiri Baraka was named New Jersey Poet Laureate by the state Commission on Humanities for the two-year period 2002 – 2004. His most recent book of poetry Un Poco Low Coup (I Reed Publishers) was released last year. He and his wife Amina Baraka have operated the arts space Kimako’s Blues People in Newark, New Jersey for fifteen years. Both work frequently with their Word-Music Ensemble, Blue Ark: The Word Ship. Amiri Baraka has performed consistently with musicians, and is featured on CDs with David Murray, New York Art Quartet, Hugh Ragin, Archie Shepp/Roswell Rudd and the rap group The Roots.
Mr. Baraka was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also won the James Weldon Johnson medal for outstanding contribution to the Arts. Both Amiri Baraka and his wife, Amina, are long time political activists as well as artists. As Chairman of Newark’s Committee for Unified Newark and later the international Congress of Afrikan Peoples, Amiri Baraka was the leading force in organizing the historic National Black Political Convention in Gary, Indiana in 1972.
